Joshua Tromans - Pianist and 2019 Rising Star

Joshua started piano lessons at the very young age of three and has not looked back. He has performed in masterclasses for some of the best contemporary world class pianists and educators today such as Yefim Bronfman, Emanuel Ax, and Louis Lortie. When he was seven years old, Joshua was featured as a piano prodigy on the CBC Radio One popular show "The Early Edition". He received his ARCT in Piano Performance at the age of ten and his Grade 10 at the age of eight, earning First Class Honours with Distinction. In 2015, Joshua was honoured to be Lang Lang's duet partner in the "101 Pianists" event in Vancouver. At age twelve, Joshua made his debut with the VSO at the Orpheum theatre, as the winner of the "Future of Excellence Competition" (Junior Division), where he performed Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, and received an overwhelming standing ovation. He is consistently awarded top prizes and awards in Music Festivals and competitions and regularly performs in gala concerts. Last summer, Joshua was selected to represent the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival (senior piano) in the Performing Arts BC "Provincial Festival 2018" in Victoria.

Joshua will be performing the first movement of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C Major, Op.26. Although this concerto did not arouse much enthusiasm when first performed by Prokofiev himself in Chicago, it went on to become one of the most popular piano concertos of the first half of the 20th century.  This concerto is challenging for both the listener and the performer and, as Joshua noted, “certain sections need to be played very fast with clear articulation. I overcame this challenge by playing slowly and gradually increasing speed without losing control.”

One might say that Joshua is already a seasoned performer, but as he is always looking to advance in his musical vocation he sees this opportunity to perform with the Richmond Orchestra as a “valuable experience that will help me grow as a musician and gain in performance experience. It will help solidify my understanding of what is required of me in order to become a solid performing artist.”
