Grant Us Peace

November 4, 2017 at 7:30pm
Richmond Orchestra & Chorus
Fraserview MB Church, Richmond

Two works with deep connections to the cessation of war comprise our fall concert. The Violin Concerto of Erich von Korngold was written following the fall of Nazi Germany. Korngold had been creating film music in Hollywood, and vowed not to write for the classical concert hall until he could do so in freedom. His concerto is full of exuberance, and uses material written for earlier movie scores.

Between the two world wars, Europe was uneasy. The 1914-18 war had been labeled as “the war to end all wars” but it was clear that this was not a peace that would last. The English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams turned to the poetry of American writer Walt Whitman in an appeal against the senselessness of war. Chorus and Orchestra join to present this anguished and beautiful work, Dona Nobis Pacem so particularly appropriate around Remembrance Day.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

December 9 at 7:30pm & December 10 at 3:00pm
Richmond Chorus
Gilmore Park United Church, Richmond

Richmond Chorus looks forward to sharing some of our favourite seasonal music, both sacred and secular, with our Christmas audiences. Traditions become established for a reason – they make us feel good!  Come and join us in the carols and Christmas readings we love – both performance and participatory fun!

Rising Stars 2018

February 17, 2018 at 7:30pm
Richmond Orchestra
Fraserview MB Church, Richmond

Since 2009, the Richmond Orchestra has presented our annual Rising Stars concert.  ROCA invites the up and coming musical talent of Richmond, the concerto and composition winners of the Richmond Music Festival, to participate in this concert, which features a variety of music for all tastes.  Many of the young people who have participated in previous Rising Stars concerts have gone on to  careers in music. The exuberance of youth combined with the seasoned musicians of the Richmond Orchestra makes for an exciting evening of orchestral music.

A TASTE OF BC

March 10, 2018 at 7:30PM
Richmond Chorus & Chilliwack Symphony Chorus
Fraserview MB Church, Richmond

Richmond Chorus is joined by members of Chilliwack Symphony Chorus in a program of music that celebrates the composers and arrangers of our own province. The two choirs will perform separately and together, offering the same program in both Chilliwack (March 3) and Richmond (March 10). Repertoire will include the patriotic (Ron Smail’s arrangement of The Maple Leaf Forever), the sentimental (Stephen Smith’s In a Summer Garden, commissioned for Richmond Chorus), the sacred (Rupert Lang’s Agneau de Dieu) and many other works, and it will culminate in the magnificent setting of I will Sing Unto the Lord by Imant Raminsh.

Bizet, Ibert & Beethoven

April 21, 2018 at 7:30pm
Richmond Orchestra
South Arm United Church, Richmond

This concert will feature the Richmond Orchestra's principal flute, Bernard Blary, performing the densely textured and melodically intricate Flute Concerto composed by Jacques Ibert.  With this lesser known composer we will pair perhaps the most well known French composition in Bizet's Carmen Suite.  We finish this program with one of our favourite symphonic composers, Beethoven with his Symphony No. 1.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away...
