About the Concert
Christmas time! As the song says, “The most wonderful time of the year!” Decorating the Christmas tree, finding that perfect gift, visiting Santa, and enjoying long-standing traditions with family and friends makes this season a favourite with many people. Christmas time has always been a special time for the Richmond Chorus as we dig out our old favourite carols, find the perfect rousing audience sing-along and learn new music written especially for the season.
Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, our selection for the first half of the concert, has a Canadian connection. In 1942 the composer was travelling from the USA back to Britain, a rather frightening prospect with all the U-Boat activity of the time. The ship he was on made a stop at Halifax before making a run for the UK. During this lay-over Britten came across a book of medieval poems. These poems so captivated his imagination that he abandoned the music he was working on and instead used these poems to create The Ceremony of Carols, a suite of carols scored for treble voices and harp. The work proved so popular that the publishers commissioned Julius Harrison to make an arrangement for mixed voices.
Those of you who are unfamiliar with A Ceremony of Carols are in for a very pleasant surprise. The suite comprises a sequence of choral songs that range from the exuberance of Wolcum Yole! and Deo Gratias to the tenderness of There is No Rose and In Freezing Winter Night. The Richmond Chorus is very excited to welcome harpist Matthieu Dupont to join us in this work.
And then on to something completely different! The second half of the program offers an eclectic mix of well-loved seasonal music including If You Would Hear The Angels Sing, by Vancouver composer Stephen Smith, and Mary Did You Know? – a favourite of the Chorus’s. Christmas readings both new and old enhance the collection, and Rudolph and Santa will no doubt make an appearance before we are joined by Matthieu and his harp in an arrangement of a well-known carol, Still, Still Night before ending with a traditional audience carol.
